AT&T and Verizon to turn phones into credit cards?

The nation's two largest cell phone operators are forming an alliance with the credit card company Discover Financial Services and global bank Barclays to create a new service that could displace credit and debit cards with smartphones, the news agency reported. AT&T and Verizon Wireless are believed to be equal partners in the venture, with T-Mobile--the fourth largest wireless operator in the U.S--holding a smaller stake, Bloomberg also reported. The companies are supposedly gearing up to test the new service in stores in Atlanta and three other cities, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg.

Representatives from AT&T and Verizon Wireless declined to comment on rumors of the new alliance.

The way the service would work is that consumers would be able to use their smartphones, instead of plastic credit cards, to make purchases. Discover would process the payments and Barclays would be the bank that helps manage the accounts, the Bloomberg story said.

Using cell phones to pay for things is not a new concept. Similar systems already exist in Japan, Turkey, and the U.K. Thetechnology has also been tested in the U.S. for several years. Nokia and MasterCard launched a trial in the U.S. in 2003. In 2006, Cingular, which is now AT&T, teamed up with Nokia and financial institutions Citigroup and MasterCard to test new phones with MasterCard PayPass contactless payment capability.

This time around, it looks like AT&T and Verizon Wireless are working with Discover instead of Visa and MasterCard. This is a big deal considering that Visa and MasterCard are the dominant credit card companies in the U.S. Bloomberg cited an industry newsletter the Nilson Report, which stated MasterCard handled $2.45 trillion, or 82 percent, of U.S. consumer spending on general-purpose cards last year.

Visa and MasterCard also see big opportunity in mobile payments, and these companies have been investing for years in their own mobile solutions, according to Bloomberg. Visa has developed an iPhone App with DeviceFidelity that allows people to store payment information for multiple credit card accounts. Meanwhile, MasterCard is still promoting its PayPass service and has put PayPass stickers on the backs of mobile phones allowing people to make "contactless" payments, Bloomberg reported.

Still, mobile payments haven't taken off in a big way in the U.S. There are several reasons that could be hampering adoption, such as common standards for implementing technology so that merchants and retailers can deploy common sets of equipment and software to handle transactions. Consumers have also been nervous about security issues.

But all this could soon change as more merchants become equipped to handle payments, and consumers become more comfortable using smartphones to do more things. Today people rely on their smartphones to do much more than simply talk and text. Today, wireless consumers use their phones to check and send e-mails, access social-networking sites, and surf the Web. They also use thousands of mobile apps to do everything from streaming music to managing travel arrangements. So using their phones to pay for groceries, a new pair of shoes, or a train ticket may not be far off.

Do you believe the CDMA iPhone rumors?

Rumors about Verizon — or any other carrier besides AT&T — have been floating around ever since the original iPhone first came out back in 2007, and now we have fresh grist for the rumor mill, courtesy of the Wall Street Journal.

Repeating almost the same (unverified) story it reported way back in March, the Journal claims that Apple is hard at work on a CDMA version of the iPhone, which would theoretically work on the CDMA wireless networks of either Sprint or ... drumroll please ... Verizon Wireless.

The new, CDMA-ready iPhone could be ready by the first quarter of next year, notes the Journal, repeating what many analysts and other rumormongers have been saying for months now.

The Journal story would appear to bolster reports late last month that Apple and its suppliers were ramping up to churn out about 3 million CDMA iPhones for an early 2011 launch.

The Journal also claims that Apple is already at work on a new iPhone (according to nameless "people briefed on the matter") — one with a "different form factor" than the current iPhone 4. Would the rumored new design fix the widely reported "death grip" that may (or may not) have affected the iPhone 4’s reception problems? The article doesn’t say.

Otherwise, the latest Journal story doesn’t really add anything new to the churning rumor mill; in other words, it’s just another drip in the "is the iPhone coming to Verizon?" bucket.

Which isn’t to say that Verizon isn’t getting an iPhone early next year, of course. The conventional wisdom has it that Apple’s exclusive deal with AT&T for the iPhone is about to expire, if it hasn’t already. And based on the latest reports that Android is nipping at the iPhone’s heels in terms of smartphone market share, it seems logical that Apple might want to get the iPhone on the nation’s largest wireless network — which, it just so happens, is on the cusp of launching a speedy new 4G LTE data network.

Keep in mind, however, that the new Journal story — as well as other recent reports — have been careful to note only that Apple is (maybe!) working on a CDMA-ready iPhone ... not necessarily one for Verizon, though. After all, there’s also Sprint, which goes the CDMA way, as well as other large CDMA carriers in Asia.

It’s also worth noting that Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg seemed to downplay the possibility of Verizon Wireless getting the iPhone, telling an audience of conventioneers late last month that while the carrier would "love" an iPhone, it would have to "earn" it first — perhaps once it expands its network to cover enough users to make it worth Apple’s while.

So maybe there is a CDMA iPhone, but Verizon won’t get one. Or maybe Seidenberg’s remark was just a smokescreen, and Verizon is getting an iPhone early next year. Or ... or ...

Here’s the point: We’ve been hearing these Verizon iPhone and CDMA iPhone literally for years now, and so far, no dice. Back when the iPad was unveiled last January, word was Steve Jobs would announce the Verizon iPhone — and it didn’t happen.

I have no doubt that Apple will — eventually — unleash the iPhone onto other U.S. carriers, and perhaps Verizon too. Strategically, it makes perfect sense. But having been burned many times before, I won’t believe it until I see it.

So, I ask you: Do you believe the CDMA iPhone rumors? Want an iPhone on Verizon, or any carrier besides AT&T?

Toshiba GL Series Glasses-Free 3D TV

Toshiba will be the first company to bring a glasses-free 3D TV to market. The launch is planned for late December and in Japan only. Two initial models, the 20-inch Toshiba 20GL1 and 12-inch Toshiba 12GL1, both will be based on the parallax barrier approach found in the Nintendo 3DS. The approach requires that viewers sit in sweet spots but is more comfortable over long periods and cheaper for multiple viewers.

The 20-inch model will be powered by a custom Cell processor, similar to that used in Sony’s PS3 and which was co-developed by Toshiba in conjunction with Sony and IBM. Its 20-inch 720p display is LED backlit and will also play 2D images. For maximum effect, viewers must sit back at least 2.95 feet away from the screen. It will incorporate a range of ports including CEC-capable HDMI, USB and Ethernet.

The 12-inch model drops the Cell processor, as its lower 466×350 resolution doesn’t require the same level of processing power to deliver the same effect. Optimal viewing is achieved from a minimum distance of 2.13 feet. It’s also equipped with LED backlighting and similar ports but can double as a photo frame, accepting SD cards loaded with JPEG images. The SD card can also play AVCHD files, and the TV can tune in 1Seg over-the-air TV when in Japan.

The 20-inch will retail for the equivalent of $2,900 and the 12-inch for $1,450. International pricing and availability has yet to be announced.
