Aakash tablet goes on sale for Rs 2500 online

DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, has started the online booking and pre booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet. Online booking is for students' version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash.

Students' version of Aakash will be available for Rs 2,500 and will be delivered in seven days. The commercial version, UbiSlate 7 is priced at Rs 2,999. The payment mode for both the tablets is cash on delivery.

The commercial version of Aakash tablet will be powered by Android 2.3 and will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory.

Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.

"The improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end," a spokesperson of DataWind told The Mobile Indian.

The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. "The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to upgradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing," the spokesperson said.

To book and prebook student and commercial versions respectively of Aakash tablet, users have to visit DataWind's website and fill up the required form. In case of booking they will get a booking ID and a message which will state, "You will shortly receive an email confirmation from our support team with further details."

In case of pre booking users will get a confirmation message which will state, "The commercial version of the Akash UbiSlate 7 would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible."

As a matter of fact, the confirmation message a reader will see is factually incorrect as The mobile Indian had reported earlier the Aakash tablet will be available only by January end.

Datawind has however not cleared how it is going to establish the identity of students who will book the cheapest version of Aakash tablet. When The Mobile Indian contacted spokesperson of Datwind he said, "Anyone can book the student version of Aakash tablet."

This defeats the purpose of providing students an affordable tablet as now anyone can place an order to get the tablet. Interestingly, now it has been revealed that the government has procured only 10,000 Aakash tablets for distribution in schools and colleges of the initial 1 lakh proposed.

It looks like the company was in a hurry to start the online booking process and has not done not proper homework before staring it.

Rumor du jour: Apple testing Siri on older iPhones

Would Apple give up one of the big reasons to pull out your wallet on its latest iPhone by offering its hottest feature to users with older models?

iOS hacking blog Jailbreak Nation says that may be in the cards, in report claiming that Apple is testing Siri, its voice assistant feature that is exclusive to the iPhone 4S, on older iOS devices including the iPhone 4.

The rumor comes on the heels of efforts to get the feature to work on the iPhone 4 without Apple's permission, requiring the use of a device that's been jailbroken. That means users can write files and install applications on their iOS device without going through Apple's App Store.

One such effort had a breakthrough last week, with its creator finding a way to get Siri's commands to go through Apple's servers, which play gatekeeper to make sure the device that's sending voice snippets is an iPhone 4S. In a demonstration provided to blog 9to5mac, the feature is shown working just as fast as on the 4S, which sports a beefier processor than the one in the iPhone 4. Yet that solution is currently unavailable to those with jailbroken devices and has no release timetable.

The real question is what Apple has to gain from bringing the feature to older devices. No doubt it would delight iPhone 4 users to get Siri without having to buy new hardware, and possibly extending their carrier contracts. But it would also cut down on the number of reasons the iPhone 4S is an improvement on its predecessor. That said, the data Apple collects from Siri in the form of user queries and voice sampling could be a huge asset to the company, which also operates its own advertising business called iAd, making a larger group of users statistically advantageous. The same goes for keeping an eye on the kinds of searches and activities users are doing on their devices, which could provide valuable intelligence on what to add or improve in future iterations.

One very important thing to note here is that Apple's history of iOS updates thus far would suggest the company would not add such a high-profile feature. For instance, Voice Over--which is Siri's predecessor--was available only to iPhone 3GS owners, due in part to the requirement the 3GS' faster processor. Likewise, multi-tasking, which was the headlining feature of iOS 4.0, could only work on the iPhone 3GS and higher. Siri differs from those efforts in that most of the hard work is being done on Apple's servers, which are piped with a user's voice commands then sent back as something the phone can use.

Siri remains in beta, with Apple planning to add additional features to it in the form of extra languages, localizations for its Maps app, and support for local searches, all things Apple says will be delivered in 2012. The voice assistant was previously available as a standalone application on the App Store, which was shelved the same week Siri the iPhone 4S feature was formally announced.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

Apple refreshes iMacs with faster CPUs, Thunderbolt ports

Apple updated its iMac all-in-one desktops today, adding Intel's second-generation quad-core Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs and Thunderbolt data ports.
The new models are already available for purchase from Apple's Web site and its retail stores, with prices ranging from $1,199 for the 21.5-inch iMac to $1,999 for the 27-inch model.
Along with the updated CPUs and the new high-speed data port, the new iMacs sport faster Advanced Micro Devices' graphics processors than their predecessors and integrated FaceTime HD video cameras. Otherwise, little else about the iMac has changed from the previous models that debuted in June 2010. (That includes external design; the 2011 and 2010 models look all but identical.)
Apple's new 27-inch iMac includes two Thunderbolt data ports, in addition to 4 USB 2.0 inputs and a FireWire 800 port.

The upgrades are in keeping with the rumors that appeared on CNET and elsewhere over the past few months. They also match updates Apple made to the MacBook Pro line earlier this year.
Intel's second-generation Core CPUs, formerly known by the code name Sandy Bridge, bring increased power efficiency over Intel's previous generation of Core CPUs, along with faster performance, particularly from its built-in graphics processing capabilities. While the initial batch of Sandy Bridge-supporting motherboards were recalled due to a flaw in one of the storage processing chips, Intel has since rectified the issue and has resumed shipping.

Thunderbolt, which debuted with the updated MacBook Pros, is also an Intel design and offers a new, bi-directional data port designed to simplify external device connections to laptop and desktop computers. The standard supports both data and video throughput simultaneously with the appropriate connectors. As with the MacBook Pro, the Thunderbolt port on the new iMac replaces the Mini DisplayPort output found on previous generation iMacs.

Instacast: The ultimate podcast manager for iPhone?

I love podcasts. When I'm in the car, I like nothing better than to queue up shows like "This American Life," "Wiretap," and "A Prairie Home Companion," to name just a few.
Of course, if I forget to sync my iPhone for a few days, I won't have the latest episodes on tap. The podcast manager (if you can call it that) that's built into iOS doesn't support streaming, and I can download new shows only over Wi-Fi.

Instacast doesn't have the world's best interface, but it's a pretty awesome podcast manager all the same.

Enter Instacast, a podcast manager that not only overcomes these shortcomings, but also makes it easy to find other podcasts I might like.
It accomplishes this latter feat by way of the Add screen, which is divided into Popular, Just Added, and Genres sections. There's also a search option, and a handy iPod button for subscribing to podcasts that are already on your device. (Alas, you have to add them individually; it would be nice if you could subscribe to all with one quick tap.)
From there the interface gets a little confusing, though with a little poking around (make that tapping around), you should have no trouble figuring it out. The app can either stream or download (i.e., "cache") your podcasts, and you don't need to be on a Wi-Fi network for either one: it works over EDGE and 3G as well.
Instacast can also automatically cache the newest episodes, and of course it will automatically resume episodes where you left off--even if you streamed them. I especially like the integrated Web browser, which gives you the option of viewing each episode's show notes.
If you're a diehard podcast fan, then Instacast is well worth $1.99. That said, depending on what you like to listen to, you might be better off with different apps. For example, when it comes to "This American Life," it's hard to beat that show's eponymous app. And the awesome NPR News app streams all NPR shows on demand.
Have you found a podcast manager you like better? If so, crow about it in the comments!

Wi-Fi Alliance to ease access to Wi-Fi hot spots

Connecting to public Wi-Fi hot spots can be a challenge, but the Wi-Fi Alliance is hoping to ease some of the pain.
Responsible for certifying Wi-Fi products and technology, the Wi-Fi Alliance said yesterday that it's working on a new certification program that should make it easier to access and use public hot spots. Various members of the alliance, including service providers and device makers, have already formalized the requirements needed to test such a certification program.
Once in place, the new hot spot program would offer several benefits to Wi-Fi users.
Computers, phones, and other connected gadgets would discover and choose the right Wi-Fi networks to access based on user preferences, network speed, and other conditions. Certain devices would be given automatic access to the network by using such products as SIM cards, which can store the necessary log-in credentials and are already used in phones and other cellular gadgets.
The process of configuring a new user account would run smoother by cutting out certain steps and ensuring a more common setup among different vendors. Finally, the program would address security concerns over using unprotected public hot spots by encrypting all data over the network through the WPA2 standard.
The new program would also help ease the strain on overtaxed cellular networks by more seamlessly handing off data from those networks to available Wi-Fi hot spots.
"Ensuring end users can easily access hot spot networks from various providers is a win for subscribers, service providers, and device makers alike," Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance, said in a statement. "We envision an automated, cellular-like experience for Wi-Fi users around the world in security-protected service provider hot spots."
Following a testing period this year, the Wi-Fi Alliance is hoping to certify the new program by the first half of 2012.

The new iPad 2 is more powerful than previous iPad more processing speed, moregraphic card more RAM and new feature that is Camera one on the front and one on the rear.
iPad 2 has had a redesign and the body is now just 8.8mm thin, that’s slimmer than the 9.3mm thin iPhone 4 and noticably thinner than the iPad, which measured 13mm.  The overall size of the tablet has seen a slight reduction in size too, by about 5mm all round.  The weight is the next thing to change, as the iPad 2 tips the scales at 601 grams, that’s 80 grams less than the Wi-Fi iPad, and that’s going to make a difference.

iPad 2 support GSM 850,900,1800,1900 and UMTS : 850,900,1900,2100 , iPad 2 is coming in both the version GSM and CDMA. that is a great thing in iPad 2 now CDMA people can enjoy.

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset is pictured

Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset is pictured
Now that Sony Ericsson has at last captured the attention of a major U.S. carrier or two with the Xperia PLAY, it is time for the joint venture to turn its attention toward broadening its product line. A recently leaked photo appears to show a Sony Ericsson branded Windows Phone 7 device with a slide out landscape QWERTY keyboard.

We can't rule out a little photoshop magic here because usually when a landscape QWERTY is deployed, the image on the screen changes orientation to match the QWERTY. But let's go out on a limb for a moment and say that the picture is real. Anyone in the market for a Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7 handset?
